Flyer mid-swing on the full outdoor flying trapeze rig above the jungle at Airborne Arts Costa Rica

Flying Trapeze Retreat

Learn to fly on a full outdoor rig in the mountains of Costa Rica, with the jungle below and the Pacific on the horizon.

Fly Above the Jungle Canopy

There are very few places in the world where you can learn flying trapeze on a full outdoor rig surrounded by rainforest, and this is one of them. Airborne Arts was purpose-built for flight. The rig stands above the Diamante valley in the mountains of South-West Costa Rica, with views across 300 miles of coastal mountain range and an 1,800-foot waterfall across the valley. You climb the ladder, take the bar, and the first thing you notice past your own heartbeat is the jungle stretching out beneath your feet.

Our coaching team is led by Jonathon Conant, co-founder of Trapeze School New York, one of the largest circus schools in the United States. He has spent decades putting first-timers safely into the air and refining the technique of experienced flyers. Whether your goal is a clean first knee hang or a return out of lines, the progression is built around you, session by session.

A flying trapeze retreat here is a full week of training, rest and immersion. Mornings often start with conditioning and ground school. Flight sessions run when the light and wind are at their best. Between sessions you eat three freshly prepared, mostly organic meals, swim in the pool overlooking the valley, and fall asleep to the sound of the forest. Every part of the week is designed so that your body recovers as hard as it trains.

Absolute beginners are genuinely welcome. Most guests who arrive having never touched a trapeze leave with a catch. Experienced flyers get the rare gift of repetition: daily access to a rig without queues, with coaches who can see exactly what your swing needs.

From First Flight to Catches

Ground school and safety

Harness work, net protocol, timing calls and the mechanics of a clean takeoff before you ever leave the platform.

The swing

Force-outs, sweeps and seven, the rhythm that powers every trick that follows.

Releases and catches

Knee hangs, splits, whips and heels-off into the hands of a catcher, built up at your pace.

Returns and out-of-lines

For experienced flyers: bar-to-bar returns, working out of safety lines and refining advanced timing.

Every stay includes lodging above the Diamante valley and three freshly prepared meals a day. Deposits and payment plans are available on most retreat weeks, so you can reserve your spot now and pay over time.

Before You Book

Do I need any experience to join a flying trapeze retreat?

No. Most of our guests take their first flight here. Coaches run full ground school before anyone leaves the platform, you fly in safety lines, and there is a net under the entire rig. Experienced flyers train alongside beginners on their own progressions.

How fit do I need to be?

If you can climb a ladder and hang from a bar for a few seconds, you can start. The week builds strength quickly, and coaches scale every session to your body and your energy that day.

What is included in a retreat week?

Daily coached flight sessions, accommodation on the property, three freshly prepared meals a day, and full access to the pool, jungle trails and common spaces. Private room upgrades and experiences like massage are available when you register.

When is the best time of year to come?

Retreats run through the dry season, roughly December to April, when mornings are clear and flying conditions are at their best. For travelers from the UK, Europe and Canada, that is your winter: the best possible time to trade grey skies for the jungle.
